Underground Anodes
Underground anodes are used in cathodic protection systems to prevent corrosion of metal structures buried underground, such as pipelines, storage tanks, and foundations. Anodes are electrochemical devices that generate a current to counteract the natural corrosion process.
In a cathodic protection system, the anodes are connected to the structure to be protected and provide a source of electrons to the structure. The electrons flow through the soil or water to the metal structure, thereby preventing corrosion.
Underground anodes can take many forms, such as sacrificial anodes, impressed current anodes, or distributed anodes. Sacrificial anodes are made of a metal that corrodes more easily than the metal structure being protected, and therefore sacrificial anodes gradually corrode and protect the structure from corrosion. Impressed current anodes are powered by a DC power supply and generate a current to protect the structure from corrosion. Distributed anodes are installed in a pattern around the structure being protected to provide a more uniform protection.
The selection of anode type and placement depends on factors such as the size of the structure, the soil or water conditions, and the expected corrosion rate. Proper design, installation, and maintenance of underground anodes are crucial to ensure the long-term effectiveness of cathodic protection systems.
