Here’s how the process typically works:
-Clean the pipe: The area of the pipe where the anode wire will be attached must be cleaned thoroughly to remove any dirt, rust, or other contaminants that could interfere with the weld.
-Prepare the connector: The connector consists of a metal sleeve and a welding material that is typically made of a mixture of copper oxide and aluminum powder. The welding material is inserted into the sleeve and compacted.
-Position the anode wire: The anode wire is inserted through the connector and positioned so that it makes contact with the pipe.
-Ignite the welding material: A spark or electric current is used to ignite the welding material inside the connector. This creates an exothermic reaction that generates intense heat, melting the welding material and causing it to flow around the anode wire and the pipe.
-Allow the weld to cool: Once the welding material has solidified, the weld is allowed to cool. The resulting connection is strong, durable, and able to withstand the electrical current required for cathodic protection.
It’s important to note that the cadweld or exothermic weld process should only be performed by trained professionals who have experience with the equipment and procedures involved. Improperly installed connections can compromise the effectiveness of the cathodic protection system and lead to corrosion and other issues.
