Anode rod magnesium is a metal rod that is placed in a water heater tank to prevent the tank from corroding. Magnesium is one of the materials that can be used to make an anode rod. When a magnesium anode rod is installed in a water heater tank, it corrodes instead of the tank. The magnesium rod sacrifices itself to protect the steel tank from rust and corrosion.
Over time, the anode rod will eventually corrode away completely, and it will need to be replaced. Most experts recommend checking the anode rod every year and replacing it when it is about 75% consumed to ensure the continued protection of the water heater tank.
