Sacrificial Anodes
Sacrificial Anodes are metal objects made from a more reactive material than the metal they are meant to protect. They are commonly used to prevent corrosion in a variety of metal structures, including boats, pipelines, and storage tanks.
The principle behind sacrificial anode is based on the electrochemical reaction known as galvanic corrosion. In this process, two different metals in contact with each other in an electrolyte (such as seawater) can produce an electrical current that causes one of the metals to corrode more quickly than it would on its own.
By placing a more reactive metal, such as zinc or magnesium, in contact with the metal to be protected, the sacrificial anode will corrode preferentially, protecting the other metal from corrosion. This is because the more reactive metal will attract the electrical current, and therefore, the corrosive action away from the metal it is meant to protect.
Anode require periodic replacement, as they will eventually be consumed by corrosion over time. The frequency of replacement depends on several factors, including the type of metal being protected, the environment in which it is located, and the size and quality of the sacrificial anode.
