How does your magnesium anode work? : Magnesium anode Sacrificial anti-corrosion protects steel by sacrificial electrochemical action. Magnesium is electrically negative compared to iron. When the magnesium rod is connected by a conductor to the steel tank filled with water. The current will continue to flow through the water between the magnesium rod and any exposed metal space on the wall. The cycle is completed through the tank back to the magnesium rod. This protective current is produced by ions that release magnesium. and result in corrosion in the anode area This type of electrical protection is known as ‘sacrifice’; The magnesium rod (anode) corrodes instead of the tank (cathode). This principle of electrocorrosion control is called electrochemical corrosion. ‘Cathodic protection’ as the cathodic surface is impervious to rust. Sacrificial anodes are used to protect metal structures such as oil pipelines, ships and offshore oil platforms from corrosion by providing more reactive metals that corrode first instead of the structure itself.
