1. Expansion and Contraction: Oils, like most substances, expand when heated and contract when cooled. This means that the volume of the oil can change with temperature fluctuations. If the temperature of the equipment or environment increases, the oil may expand, leading to a higher reading on the level indicator. Conversely, if the temperature drops, the oil may contract, leading to a lower reading.
2. Viscosity Changes: The viscosity or thickness of the oil changes with temperature. When cold, the oil becomes more viscous (thicker), which might slow its movement and make it take longer to settle to a stable level reading. When hot, the oil becomes less viscous (thinner), which can affect how it behaves in the reservoir or sump.
3. Air Bubbles: Rapid temperature changes can introduce air bubbles into the oil, which can temporarily skew readings. These bubbles might be more prevalent when the oil is heated quickly.
